Learning recorder means learning a whole family of instruments with repertoire spanning many hundreds of years. The recorder is a woodwind instrument known for its beautiful pure tone and expressive qualities. It’s a perfect choice for young beginners, as it is small, light and very responsive. It’s also extremely portable and affordable. Suzuki recorder repertoire begins with a carefully selected collection of folk songs, gradually progressing to pieces from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The recordings are unique, with the accompaniment played on Harpsichord and Viola da gamba.
Professional recorder players are very versatile and learn to play many different sized recorders to a high level. The Suzuki Repertoire allows for this flexibility, so that young beginners can start on the soprano recorder and older children or adult beginners on the alto recorder and sometimes the larger, tenor recorder.
The first 4 Volumes are for either soprano or alto recorder, then Volumes 5-8 combine pieces for soprano, alto and even sopranino recorder. Recorder ensembles with all the different sized recorders have been popular since the 1500s, making group classes a lot of fun, being able to incorporate the different recorders as students learn to play them.
Young students generally start learning on a soprano recorder, the size that is most often used in school music programs. Because Suzuki method is an aural approach which focuses on producing excellent tone from the earliest stages it is essential to have a good quality instrument.
Parents are requested not to purchase a recorder before starting lessons as teachers will have recommendations on the type of instrument to purchase, and where to buy it.
